Relay for Life held June 8 in Cold Spring

Even though the rain squandered the hopes of lighting the thousands of luminaries surrounding the Rocori High School track, it was an impressive sight to see hundreds of people turn out for even a short while to help raise over $83,000 for the American Cancer Society at the 4th Annual Relay for Life in Cold Spring.

Thirty-five teams of 10 people walked to raise funds in memory of friends and family members who have battled cancer. Participants were from the communities of Cold Spring, Richmond, Paynesville, Rockville, Avon, Holdingford, Roscoe, Spring Hill, Farming, St. Martin, St. Nicholas, and Jacobs Prairie.

The night's event was cut short at 9:30 p.m. when the rain and thunderstorms became too strong. Prior to the closing, people of all ages enjoyed music, Marnantelli's Pizza, hamburgers from the Cold Spring American Legion, haircuts and up-do's from the Regency Beauty Academy, and massages and face painting. With all profits going to the American Cancer Society.

Event sponsors included Cold Spring Chiropractic, Rockville Lions, Richmond Lions, Cold Spring Lions, Paynesville Area Health Care System, and Cold Spring Granite Company. Their generous contributions helped offset the cost of the event and assured the dollars raised by the participants will be used to fight cancer.

The funds raised will enable the American Cancer Society to expand its services to cancer patients and their families, to offer more educational programs to reduce people's risk of getting cancer, and to expand cancer research programs.

To all the committee members, volunteers, corporate sponsors, businesses, team members, people who sponsored a walker or purchased a luminary you should feel very proud to have been part of such a successful event. We are truly a community that takes up the fight!!!
