PAHCS to expand long-term care services

Paynesville Area Health Care System and The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society announced a letter of intent in which Paynesville Area Health Care System will purchase the Good Samaritan centers in Paynesville and Watkins, Minn.

The Hilltop Good Samaritan Center is a 65-bed skilled nursing facility in Watkins, Minn., and the Paynesville Good Samaritan Care Center is a 46-bed boarding care facility in Paynesville, Minn. The two facilities will be merged with the Paynesville Area Health Care System. The Paynesville Area Health Care System operates 30 acute care beds, a 64-bed skilled nursing home, a senior housing complex, and clinics in Belgrade, Paynesville, Eden Valley, Richmond, and Watkins.

Willie LaCroix, CEO of the Paynesville Area Health Care System, says, "The merger of the Good Samaritan Society homes in Paynesville and Watkins with the Paynesville Area Health Care System is a strengthening move for long-term care in this area for years to come. I believe the communities we serve, residents, families, and staff members of all three facilities will be pleased with what evolves from this merger. We anticipate excellent cooperation from everyone involved and affected by this merger."

Tom Kooiman, administrator of the Hilltop Good Samaritan Center and the Paynesville Good Samaritan Care Center, stated, "By merging the two organizations together, it brings health care services in this area under one umbrella. This will allow for better coordination of services. I believe both organizations have similar missions and this merger will allow the facilities to move forward to better meet the needs of the residents, staff, and

the local communities." The Paynesville Area Health Care System is a public entity. It is a district health care system, led by a 13-member board of directors who are elected by local community members. These members represent the 13 entities (townships and cities) the hospital serves. The Paynesville Area Health Care System's mission is to provide integrated health care in a community-based, quality conscious, caring environment.

The Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society is the nation's largest not-for-profit provider of senior housing, with more than 240 facilities in 25 states, including 47 locations in Minnesota. The Society's Christian mission is to share God's love in word and deed by providing shelter and supportive services to older persons and others in need. The two organizations want to assure everyone involved that they will work together to make the transition for residents, families, and staff as smooth as possible.
