One way your can help lower your risk for surgery is to talk with a member of the surgical care team. Your care team includes your surgeon, your anesthetist and your nurses. We want you to be an informed patient which should result in a shorter, and safer hospital stay. Here are some suggested topics that you should address with your surgical team:
Tell your provider or specialty physician about other medical problems you may have, such as allergies or diabetes. These problems could affect your surgery and treatment.
| | Patients who smoke are more prone to infections and delayed surgical healing. If you are interested in quitting, your provider can help you with a smoking cessation program.
| | | If you are taking anticoagulation therapy, it is very important to talk about this prior to your surgery.
| | | If you do not see them do so, ask your care team members to wash their hands before examining you.
| | | Speak up if you have questions or concerns. If you dont understand, ask again. Its your body and you have a right to know!
