One way your can help lower your risk for surgery is to talk with a member of the surgical care team. Your care team includes your surgeon, your anesthetist and your nurses. We want you to be an informed patient which should result in a shorter, and safer hospital stay. Here are some suggested topics that you should address with your surgical team:

Tell your provider or specialty physician about other medical problems you may have, such as allergies or diabetes. These problems could affect your surgery and treatment.
Patients who smoke are more prone to infections and delayed surgical healing. If you are interested in quitting, your provider can help you with a smoking cessation program.
If you are taking anticoagulation therapy, it is very important to talk about this prior to your surgery.
If you do not see them do so, ask your care team members to wash their hands before examining you.
Speak up if you have questions or concerns. If you dont understand, ask again. Its your body and you have a right to know!
